MITT Program
(Mother's and Infants in Treatment Together)
MITT’s underlying philosophy is to
foster changes in high-risk, substance-abusing women by offering
effective treatment and at the same time, reduce the risk of
infant maltreatment by protecting and nurturing the safety and
developmental capacity of infants. Treatment focus includes
acknowledgement of their historical and current social experiences
(such as childhood trauma, domestic violence, and guilt and
shame associated with the stigmatization of addiction). At the
same time we will assist in meeting their special needs related
to reproduction and their responsibilities as primary caregivers.
Additionally, a residential environment where women live with
their infants will provide the opportunity to model appropriate
familial relationships and to impact practical skills.
The treatment will be child-focused, helping women to have safer
pregnancies and healthier babies, become better parents, bond
with their infants, and assure infants receive appropriate developmental
interventions and support. In addition to providing traditional
counseling, relapse prevention, and self-help services for alcohol
and drug problems, MITT will arrange for multiple on and off
site services, such as, prenatal and postpartum medical care
for the mothers, training in parenting and life skills, Mommy
and me group and other case management services.
