Case Statement
Raising Hope:

Raising Hope, is designed to move Gratitude House into a place where women will not only learn and carry out the tools of recovery in their lives – but will also be provided with the care and direction to build loving relationships with the people in their lives. This campaign also focuses on developing skills which return women to society as self sufficient, productive citizens. Raising Hope is divided into three phases: Phase 1 includes the development of a Thrift Shop; Phase 2 will be development of a Nursery/Day care center (For the Mothers and Infants in Treatment Together Program); and Phase 3 the construction of transitional housing.

Over the past 39 years, the agency has grown from a safe house to a fully accredited Level II licensed treatment center for females ages 18 and older who are chemically dependent. We have developed the expertise to conduct evaluations, assessments, and referrals based on women’s patterns of drug use, psychosocial characteristics, and physiological consequences specific to women.

Our women specific programs include residential and outpatient treatment, aftercare, and residence with specialized treatment for women with HIV/AIDS. Our newest program is called Mothers and Infants in Treatment Together (MITT). Pre and post partum women are provided with inpatient treatment focused on their chemical dependency as well as delivering and nurturing healthy and drug free infants.

Gratitude House understands, and is fully equipped to address the specific and often multiple problems that chemically dependent women face in assessing and participating in drug and/or alcohol treatment programs. Gratitude House is one of only two treatment centers for women in Palm Beach County and is unique in that it is women treating women. Our expertise lies in understanding a) the multiple demands and expectations that women face in our society; b) the impact of addiction, homelessness, and domestic violence on women, children and families; and c) the interventions and resources necessary to rehabilitate them. Fully accredited professional staff develop and guide an individualized treatment plan for each Gratitude House client.

With cutting edge services in place, Gratitude House’s next steps require capital expansions to continue to meet the needs of women who are receiving our services.

Phase 1 of Raising Hope includes the building and development of a Thrift Shop. In recent years, Gratitude House owned and operated Evelyn’s closet. This store had a very loyal and supportive clientele, and for much time, the revenue from the store went directly toward the operating costs for Gratitude House. However, due to increased rental costs, Evelyn’s Closet was closed temporarily. As a part of Raising Hope, Gratitude House wishes to open a Thrift Shop on site which will have little overhead. The operation of this store, will allow for vocational training for women who are in phase 3 of their treatment at Gratitude House. Clients will be trained in the basics of store operations and develop skills which will allow them to find employment outside of Gratitude House when they have completed their treatment. Many of the clients at Gratitude House have the capacity for gainful employment, however, they have lacked the training which makes them hirable.

Phase 2 of Raising Hope includes building a nursery for babies recently delivered to 12 months old. Often, women cannot receive treatment because of their inability to find or afford childcare. This nursery would provide onsite child care to women who are receiving services from Gratitude House. Newborns would be accessible at all times to their mothers for bonding and nursing. Our capacity for enrollment in the MITT program is 8 women at one time. The nursery would hold up to 10 babies with appropriate care and staffing. Raising Hope will ensure this commitment, to provide a setting for the best care possible for the infants and their mothers. Gratitude House will staff professional day care workers and a child development specialist to ensure the babies receive quality care.

Finally, Phase 3 of Raising Hope will allow for the construction of Transitional Housing on Gratitude House’s property. As we continue to see the cost of housing increase exponentially compared to wages earned by our clients, we have identified transitional housing as a key area for growth. Through this program, Gratitude House will provide women and their children a safe, supportive place to stay as they participate in life skills training and stabilization services that prepare them for employment and stable housing in the community. Residents will live in the transitional housing for up to two years.

Since 1968, we have made a series of commitments to women receiving treatment through Gratitude House. We are obligated to meet the ever increasing needs of women in their journey towards recovery. With Raising Hope, we will not only make a full commitment to chemically-dependent women, but we will also initiate the most sweeping architectural changes since the construction of our residential treatment program. We have a moment to seize right now, through Raising Hope.
